How to Fix a Wobbly Kenmore Washing Machine

A washing machine that wobbles during the spin cycle or seems to walk several inches into the room every time you do the laundry is annoying. Wobbling can also mean clothes that are not properly washed or clothes that are too wet when you take them out of the washer. The excessive vibration from a wobbly washer can damage the machine. Kenmore washers can wobble due to a number of causes that the homeowner can fix herself.

Things You'll Need

  • Level

Instructions

    • 1

Check the floor on which the Kenmore washer sits to make sure it is level. Place a level at various spots around the washer. If the floor is not level, place the washing machine in another location or find a way to level the floor. You should also evaluate whether or not the floor is strong enough to support a fully-loaded washer--this includes the weight of the washer itself, the water and the clothes, which together can weigh more than 300 pounds.

    • 2

Remove the legs or pedestal on which the machine is set, if you added these accessories to your Kenmore washer. If the machine does not wobble then, the legs or pedestal were not strong enough to support the machine. Replace them with stronger ones.

    • 3

Weigh the clothes you put into each load; compare the weight with the weight of each load recommended in your owner's manual. If the load is too heavy, it will cause the Kenmore washer to wobble or vibrate.

    • 4

Open the Kenmore washer and rearrange the items in the drum so the load is evenly distributed. Do this if you hear the drum hitting the inside of the washer and making a lot of noise during the spin cycle. If you are washing a large item such as a blanket, put in several smaller items to help keep the load balanced.

Level the washing machine itself. Kenmore washers have adjustable front legs and self-adjusting back legs. Adjust the two front legs and check your work with a level placed on the front edge of the top of the machine. Tilt the machine forward to allow the self-adjusting back legs to set themselves in the correct position. Check the levelness of the machine from front to back on both sides. If necessary, readjust the front legs and tilt the machine forward to reset the back legs.
