How to Remove Blue From Exhaust

Bluing on exhaust occurs from high temperatures. Exhaust gases and welding temperatures can exceed 1,000 degrees Fahrenheit. The high temperature exposure from gases or welding enables a small layer of oxygen to embed into the exhaust pipe surface. Chrome is more susceptible than stainless steel due to the process used to expose the layer of highly reflective chrome at the surface of the metal. Bluing removal can be done--with varying degrees of success depending on how deeply the bluing is embedded--with household products or with products manufactured specifically to remove bluing from metal.

Things You'll Need

  • Detergent soap
  • Soft cloth
  • 1 cup vinegar
  • 2 feet of aluminum foil
  • Blue-Job

Instructions

  1. Soap and Water

    • 1

Wash and dry the pipes to remove any debris or surface oils from the surface of the metal.

    • 2

Saturate a soft cloth with a concentrated solution of soapy water. The bluing may be caused by discoloration of oils that were transferred to the metal during the installation process. Oils could be from hands, equipment, or lubricants. Bluing of oils from surface contaminants can be removed with mild detergents and pressure. Rub the surface of the metal with the soapy cloth increasing with mild to medium pressure to remove surface oil bluing.

    • 3

Rinse and dry the chrome. If bluing has been reduced, repeat the process to remove any remaining oils.

    Aluminum Foil and Vinegar

    • 4

Wash the surface of the chrome with a mild detergent and dry thoroughly.

    • 5

Pour a cup of vinegar in a bowl. Crinkle a sheet of aluminum foil, dull side exposed, and dip it in the vinegar.

    • 6

Scrub the blued metal surface with the vinegar dampened crinkled foil. Rub the surface of the metal with the foil until a residue forms.

    • 7

Wipe away any residue that forms. Rinse the aluminum foil and repeat the scrubbing process. Ensure the aluminum foil remains wet with vinegar during the scrubbing process. Repeat as necessary.

    • 8

Wash and dry the metal surface.

    Blue-Job

    • 9

Wet the Blue-Job kit supplied cloth with water until damp.

    • 10

Place a small portion of the water dampened cloth into the jar of Blue-Job powder. Dab the powder until a thick paste forms on the cloth.

    • 11

Rub the paste into the blued metal surface. Gently rub the surface of the metal with the paste until the bluing is removed. A dull film, from the paste, will remain on the surface of the metal after the bluing is removed. This is normal.

    • 12

Remove the surface dulling by buffing the metal with a soft cloth until the luster is restored.
