Insulation of Foundation Vents

Insulating your crawl space is one of the most effective and important ways of keeping your home energy-efficient and comfortable. Traditionally, building codes require vents in basements to help control problematic moisture buildup inside the basement. But many home builders now consider it more advantageous to insulate an attic and eliminate foundation vents altogether to create a tightly sealed crawl space and help avoid moisture problems in the crawl space.

Things You'll Need

  • Power fans
  • Insulation

Instructions

    • 1

Allow all material inside the crawl space to dry thoroughly. You can control moisture by insulating your crawl space only if there is little or no excess moisture inside the crawl space to begin with. Allow everything to dry naturally, or dry the material manually with power fans before proceeding.

    • 2

Seal or remove the foundation vents. The choice between sealing the foundation vents and removing them altogether depends in large part on your budget. Removing the foundation vents and building over the vent openings will be more expensive than sealing the vents.

    • 3

Install insulation in your crawl space. Once everything in the crawl space is thoroughly dry and all foundation vents have been sealed or removed, you can insulate the crawl space without fear that moist air will make its way in through the vents and compromise the insulation by soaking it with moisture.
