How to Install a Raised Shower Base

Installing a raised shower base in your bathroom involves some planning and a little bit of masonry skill. Since a raised shower sits higher than a regular shower, another layer of material is installed beneath the shower pan. You can still install any type of shower pan you like; you just need to raise it off the floor. This project will take at least an entire day or more to complete.

Things You'll Need

Shower pan
Tape measure
Plywood or cement board
Table saw or cement board saw
Jigsaw or hole saw
PVC drainpipe

Shower drain
Masking tape
Sand mix cement
Trowel
Level
PVC adhesive

Instructions

  Fit the shower pan into the shower area and trace around the pan with a pencil. Measure and cut a section of plywood or cement board to fit this area with a table saw or cement board saw. Remove the shower pan and place the plywood or cement board on the floor.

  Set the shower pan back into place and trace around the drain hole in the pan with the pencil. Remove the shower pan and cut out the drain hole through the floor with a jig saw or hole saw. Set the drainpipe in the hole and install the shower pan's drain in the shower pan after wrapping the exposed threads with masking tape.

  Spread sand mix cement around the drainpipe and across the shower floor. Pack the sand mix into a uniform base with a hand trowel. Set the shower pan into the sand mix cement. Set a level on each side and push down to adjust the shower pan if it's not level.

  Scrape away any excess cement from below the drainpipe with the trowel. Connect the drainpipe to the T-fitting on the main drain stack with PVC adhesive.
