How to Make a Vacuum Extension for a Lint Trap

Accumulated lint in the lint trap of your dryer blocks air flow and makes your dryer work harder. You'll have to run the dryer longer to dry your clothes, using more energy. Of even more concern, a clogged lint trap can lead to fires. Cleaning the lint trap after each use and periodically vacuuming around and beneath the trap will help reduce lint buildup, save you time and energy, and help prevent fires. An extension will allow your vacuum cleaner to reach farther into the exhaust hose and to remove more lint.

Things You'll Need

  • Cardboard tube
  • Packing tape

Instructions

    • 1

Save the cardboard tube from a roll of wrapping paper. For a shorter extension, use the cardboard tube from a roll of paper towels. This tube is close to the same diameter as most vacuum cleaner hoses.

    • 2

Remove any attachments from the end of the vacuum cleaner hose. Fit the end of the cardboard tube to the end of the hose. Wrap tape around both the cardboard tube and the vacuum cleaner hose to secure the tube to the hose.

    • 3

Insert the cardboard tube into the dryer vent opening. Turn on the vacuum. Push the tube as far into the opening as it will go without bending. If you need to flatten the cardboard slightly to make it fit better, you may do so, but don't bend the tube or otherwise impede airflow.
