How to Salt the Roof

Depending on where you live, ice and snow buildup on your roof can occur during the winter months. If there's enough accumulation, the weight can cause damage to the roof, maybe even to the point of collapse. For a long time, people advocated the use of rock salt as a de-icing treatment. However, certain elements of standard rock salt can damage a roof. But there are ice-melting salts on the market that contain magnesium chloride as well as sodium chloride and won't damage your roof.

Things You'll Need

  • Ladder
  • Snow shovel
  • Ice-melting salt
  • Sack
  • Bucket

Instructions

    • 1

Climb onto your roof using a ladder and shovel all the snow off your roof.

    • 2

Take your ice-melting salt while still in its packaging and drop it onto a hard surface, such as concrete. Since ice-melting salt usually comes in brick form, this breaks up the salt. Continue until there are no large solid pieces left.

    • 3

Use your shovel to distribute the ice-melting salt evenly across your roof surface. Be sure to coat your roof thoroughly. You can also put the salt in a nylon sock and shake the opening over the roof to create a layer of salt.
