How to Install Shower P Traps

Remove the existing shower base to expose the piping beneath. Using a saw, cut through the subfloor and remove it. Remove the existing piping and p trap and discard the old pieces.

Install a new piece of subfloor over the shower base. Mark and cut a hole over the area where the p trap will be set. Use a joist to cut the hole if possible. Make sure the drain line is sloping 1/4 of an inch for every foot of piping and that the p-trap hole falls directly above the shower drain hole.

Once the p trap is in place, begin cementing the p trap together with the existing parts of the piping. Hold the pieces together for 20 seconds to ensure that the cement is properly secured in place. Cement the p trap/drain line connection after all the other pieces have been secured together.

After securing the cement, quickly plumb the new p trap with a level before the joints set together to ensure that there are no blockages in your piping. Replace the shower base in its original position and use silicon sealer to seal the joints between the tiles and base.
