How to Install Grate Heaters for Fireplaces

Grate heaters are an effective way to get the most energy efficiency from your fireplace. The grate heater has a motor that breathes in cool air from in the room and heats it with the coals from the burning fireplace. The heated air is blown out of another port by a blower fan. Installing grate heaters for fireplaces differs slightly among the manufacturers although the general process is similar. Each has a riser bar containing the inlet and outlet ports.

Things You'll Need

  • Phillips screwdriver
  • Wrench

Instructions

    • 1

Remove the glass doors from your fireplace if doors are present. Open each glass door fully so the two panels fold against each other. Lift up on the door to disengage the bottom retaining pin, and angle the bottom of the door panels away from the fireplace. Pull the top of the panels out of the upper track and set the doors aside.

    • 2

Slide the grate heater into the fireplace with the riser bar along the fireplace door track. If you do not have fireplace doors, the riser bar should be in line with the front of the firebox. Adjust the lower pin on the fireplace doors to fit into the riser. Reinstall the fireplace doors with the bottom edge of the doors on the riser.

    • 3

Attach the extenders to each end of the riser so they extend to the inside of the firebox opening. Secure the extenders to the riser with the sheet metal screws and Phillips screwdriver.

    • 4

Raise the rear legs of the grate heater if necessary so the heater is level on the floor of the firebox. Many grate heaters have legs that turn with a wrench much like a washer or dryer.

    • 5

Position the cord protector over the cord from the heater blower module to the riser bar. The cord protector is usually a metal shield that covers the cord protecting it from the heat.

    • 6

Plug the cord into a nearby wall outlet. If an extension cord is necessary to reach an outlet, use a cord that is the same rating as the grate heater power cord.
