If you are looking for a general contractor start by asking around. Perhaps you know a family friend who just had a remodel. Ask them about thier experience with their remodel. Referrals from people you know are the best way to locate a quality individual
If you don't know of anyone that has had a remodel, then look in the phone book or check out craigslist.org for available and often inexpensive contractors.
Make sure you obtain a general contractor license number from the company or individual and take the time to contact the better business bureau to see if any complaints have been filed.
Ask the contractor for references. They should easily be able to provide you with 3-4 recent projects they have done and references.
Ask for pictures of thier remodels. Any contractor who takes pride in thier work is most likely to have pictures
Make sure to obtain at least 4-5 bids for a job. You will be suprised at the price differences.
Ask about thier warranty policy
If the company requires that you pay 1/2 now and 1/2 after completion, really evaluate if its a company you want to work with. This could be a sign that the company is not stable
If any paperwork needs to be signed make sure its authentic in style not just some Office Depot template receipt.
When given a quote ask for a detailed quote that shows how much items cost. How much are the materials for the job? How many workers will be at the site? What is the hourly bill rate? Once you dig into the numbers you can start to find how you may save costs.
