How to save costs when hiring a contractor

The quoted price that a handyman gives you is not always set in stone, you can often negotiate for a lower rate or do some of the services yourself to cut costs.

Instructions

    • 1

After receiving the quote for the service ask the contractor to itemize it for you.

    • 2

Once the quote is itemized you should be able to see where the costs are coming from.

    • 3

Look for areas where you can reduce costs. For example, you may know where you can get materials for less. For example if you are paying someone to refinish your wood floors (that you just found under your carpet) perhaps you can save money by agreeing to remove the carpet staples, or discarding the carpet on your own.

You can then easily subtract the areas that you can do from the quote and negotiate a better rate.
