How to Find a Reliable Handyman in Your Area

You often hear stories about hiring a handyman who turns out to be unreliable, does shoddy work or is a con artist who takes a deposit and never returns. A reliable and skilled handyman with excellent work ethics is vital to maintaining your home to prevent it from depreciating in value and to keep everything running smoothly. Using a few guidelines enables you to hire a repairman with confidence.

Instructions

    • 1

Look around your home for the different types of projects you need completed and write them down. It may be cheaper to hire a handyman to do all the projects at once. Often, a repair person charges a basic rate to simply show up for a service call. If so, it is best to have him to do all the jobs in one visit, if possible.

    • 2

Ask friends, neighbors, relatives and co-workers for names of reliable people who have completed handyman projects in their home efficiently and at a fair price.

    • 3

Contact at least three repair persons or businesses based on the references of your acquaintances. Interview them regarding their skills, experience and fees, and ask for references you can contact. Keep in mind that electrical or plumbing work may require someone who is in that trade.

    • 4

Trust your gut instinct. If you don't feel you can trust the person or have some doubts, find someone else for the job. An honest handyman must be willing to answer all your questions without hesitation.

    • 5

Ask the person if he is covered under liability insurance. If he brings a crew with him to do the job, verify that he carries workmen's compensation insurance before allowing him to do the work.

    • 6

Contact your local Better Business Bureau to find out if there are any complaints or unfavorable reports about the company.
