Spring, summer and fall are when pests are at their greatest population. Fumigating a home or living space is best conducted when these intruders are at their height. It can keep them from creating new swarms of invaders. Fumigation may take from one to two days depending on the infestation. Homeowners should plan carefully to prepare for the induction of chemicals into the living space. Most fumigation professionals offer services to help you prepare the home. Instructions

    • 1

Extinguish all open flames such as pilot lights to gas stoves and water heaters. Shut the main gas valve off that leads into the home.

    • 2

Remove all foodstuffs, medicines and any consumable items from the home. Take out all personal hygiene products such as feminine napkins and toilet papers. Any item that may come in contact with humans or animals. Move out all pet foods and treats. Even if the items are well sealed, take no chances.

    • 3

Place all eating utensils in a double sealed plastic trash sack. Insert a trash sack into another and fill the inside bag with the items. Seal the inner bag with a round or two of duct tape. Fold this bag inside the outer bag and seal with the tape. Seal all towels and bed linens in the same manner. Protect clothing in the same method or remove them all together.

    • 4

Empty refrigerators and freezers of all contents. Typically the electricity is shut off from the home once fumigation begins to prevent any electrical sparks that may cause the fumigant to accelerate into flames. Store refrigerated and frozen food goods in another storage receptacle such as another freezer, refrigerator or large ice chests located away from the fumigation premises.

    • 5

Move all pets and plants from the interior of the home. This includes any aquarium with fish or terrariums with exotic plants.

    • 6

Remove all plastic covers from mattress, sofas or pillows. Plastic coverings will impede the migration of the fumigant into the items.
