How to Install a Duct Turning Vane

A home's heating a cooling system has two sets of duct-work. Once set distributes the conditioned air around the building, while the other brings the air back to the furnace. The shape and smoothness of the ducts directly affects the efficiency of the heating system. When ducts turn corners they sometimes take 90-degree turns. To improve the efficiency of the furnace, these turns should be rounded to bend the air around the corner.

Instructions

    • 1

Measure the inside of the duct from the outside corner to the inside corner with a measuring tape. Measure the height of the inside of the duct.

    • 2

Measure and mark two mounting rails to the inside corner to outside corner length. Cut along this line with tin snips. Count the number of slots on the mounting rails for turning vanes.

    • 3

Measure and mark the turning vanes for the inside height of the duct. Cut along these markings with tin snips. Repeat this process for the number of turning vanes you need.

    • 4

Lay the rail on a workbench and place a turning vane into a slot. Tap on the top of the vane with a mallet to secure it to the rail. Repeat this step to mount all of the vanes to the bottom rail.

    • 5

Align the top rail on top of the vanes lining up the vanes with the mounting slots. Hammer the top plate down into the vanes until they are locked together.

    • 6

Insert the assembled vane into the duct-work aligning one side in the outside corned and the other side with the inside corner. The vanes should curve in the direction of the duct bend.

    • 7

Drill a self taping screw every 2 to 3 inches through the top and bottom of the duct and into the turning vane.
