How to Acid Clean an Evaporative Condenser

An evaporative condenser is an air conditioning unit that uses the energy released during the change in state from water to gas to remove heat from a building. Because these systems use a significant amount of water, their condensing coils build up mineral deposits and must be cleaned to maintain the efficiency of the system. This is done with a gentle acid solution.

Things You'll Need

  • White vinegar
  • Spray bottle
  • Soft nylon brush
  • Water hose

Instructions

    • 1

Turn off the power to the evaporative cooler at the home's electrical distribution box.

    • 2

Pour vinegar into the spray bottle, and spray the evaporative cooler's condensing coils with the vinegar. Allow the vinegar to sit for a few minutes to break down the mineral deposits.

    • 3

Brush the condensing coils gently with a soft nylon brush. Be very careful not to damage the coils. Brush only in the direction of the fins, and never press firmly.

    • 4

Hose the coils with low water pressure to wash away the deposits. Repeat Steps 2 and 3 until all of the mineral deposits are removed.
