How to Make My Room Warmer Cheaply

Obviously, you can add extra layers of clothing, or more blankets on the bed at night if your room isn't warm enough. Still, a room that's cool and drafty isn't comfortable. Windows and doors are notorious for letting warm air out and cold air in. Once you seal those up, you'll notice an immediate improvement. You can up the temperature in your room using several other methods without breaking the bank.

Things You'll Need

  • Ceiling fan
  • Caulking
  • Weatherstripping
  • Storm windows
  • Plastic sheeting
  • Insulating window treatments
  • Heavy throw rugs
  • Heavy room-size rug

Instructions

    • 1

Reverse the direction of the ceiling fan during the cold weather months so the warm air blows back down. The blades should turn counterclockwise. Since warm air rises, it tends to accumulate around the ceiling, leaving you feeling chilly.

    • 2

Caulk around the windows on the outside, if need be, to stop air leaks. Add weatherstripping to the window frames to further keep warm air in and cold air out.

    • 3

Use storm windows in your window frames during the winter if the glass is single-paned. Put-up plastic sheeting over double-paned windows to stop drafts and make the room warmer.

    • 4

Hang insulating window treatments such as drapes, shades and shutters to help keep cold air out. Keep them closed, except on sunny days. Open the window treatments that face the south.

    • 5

Caulk and weatherstrip around any exterior doors in the room to seal them. If the doors aren't used in the winter, you may completely cover them with plastic sheeting. Roll up a rug and place it at the bottom of the doors to help block cold air.

    • 6

Close all interior doors in your room to keep it warmer.

    • 7

Lay down throw rugs or a room-size rug on the floor to make it warmer. Carpet stores sell inexpensive remnants. The material will help insulate the floor.
