How to Mount a Refrigerator Condenser Remotely

You usually find the condenser mounted on a refrigerator unit. The condenser is the set of coils mounted in the rear. The compressor forces coolant through the condenser coils, where it is cooled and then passes on to the evaporator. Some refrigerators, such as walk-in coolers, have condensers in a remote location. You can mount the condenser coils away from your refrigerator by extending the tubing. The refrigerator's cooling capacity does not depend on the proximity of the condenser coils.

Things You'll Need

  • Metal snips
  • Condenser tubing
  • Solder
  • Soldering iron
  • Cup hooks

Instructions

    • 1

Turn off the refrigerator and unplug it. Wait several hours so that the coolant in the condenser coils will drain down into the compressor.

    • 2

Cut the condenser tubing with metal snips at the top and bottom of the condenser. The bottom tube comes from the compressor, and the top tube goes to the evaporator. Remove the condenser coils, taking precautions not to puncture or twist them.

    • 3

Mount the compressor coils in the location you want them. This can be a wall or an open space under a counter. Hang the compressor coils using cup hooks. Screw the cup hooks into the wall or back of the counter, and carefully set the coils into the hooks.

Measure the amount of extra tubing you need to connect the condenser coils to the places where you cut them in back of the refrigerator. Solder the tubing to the top of the condenser coil where it was cut, and run the tubing to the input tube for the evaporator. Solder this joint. Run the lower tubing from the condenser to the tubing that leads out of the compressor (where you cut it) and solder both ends of the tubing.
