How to Clean a Permanent Trane Heat Pump Filter

Heat pumps are a versatile solution for a homeowner's heating and cooling needs. A heat pump has the ability to work as an air conditioner in the warmer months and a heater in the cooler months. A heat pump works by moving heat from one location that is cooler and relocating it to another spot that is warmer, or vice versa. One of the leading manufacturers in the United States of heat pumps is Trane, which is based in Piscataway, New Jersey. Cleaning the permanent filters on a Trane heat pump should be done every at least every three months.

Instructions

    • 1

Turn the power off on the Trane heat pump. Push the power button, which is located on the front of the unit, until all of the power indicator lights have turned off. Unhook the power connector, which is located on the side of the heat pump.

    • 2

Unlock the access door by pulling the latches toward you. Pull the door handle toward you, then lift up to remove the door. Set the door aside.

    • 3

Remove the prefilter, located just inside the door opening. Note which way the airflow arrows are pointing. Use a vacuum cleaner with a small brush attachment to vacuum the prefilter and set it aside.

    • 4

Remove the larger filters, known as collection cells, which are located just behind where the prefilter was located -- there are two standing next to each other. Make a note which one was located where.

    • 5

Use the vacuum cleaner to remove debris from the collection cell filters.

    • 6

Reinstall the collection cell filters in the same positions they were in when you removed them. Replace the prefilter in front of the collection cell filters, in the direction that the air flows.

    • 7

Reinsert the door and close the metal latches. Reattach the power connector. Press the power button for a couple of seconds until the LED light, which is green, is illuminated on the top row of lights.
