How to Diagnose Dirty HVAC Condenser Coils

An HVAC unit is split into two main parts: the large indoor unit that houses the blower and evaporator and the outdoor condenser unit, which helps filter air. The outdoor condenser unit collects a lot of dirt over the course of the year. When the coils of the condenser become clogged with dirt, the efficiency of your unit decreases. Excessive dirt will wear down your motor as it struggles to work against the debris. Diagnosis requires inspecting the condenser unit.

Instructions

    • 1

Unplug the condenser unit from the outdoor plug.

    • 2

Remove the screws from the cover around the condenser.

    • 3

Lift the cover and set it aside.

    • 4

Inspect the coils for signs of dirt. Remove and discard any large debris such as leaves or the "fluff" from cottonwood trees.

    • 5

Push a soft brush attachment onto a vacuum. Turn on the vacuum and remove all the dirt from the coils, brushing gently to avoid bending the coils.

    • 6

      Replace the cover.
