How to Lubricate a Direct Vent Blower

A direct vent blower is a fan blower connected to a furnace for a forced heat air blower system. Some vent blowers are also used in forced air units that blow both hot and cool air, depending on the setting. Over time, the fan blowers can become tight and will not blow properly due to a buildup of dust and moisture content in the vents, which may cause the vent to stick. You can address this problem yourself by cleaning and lubricating the vent blower fan.

Instructions

    • 1

Turn off the power leading to the unit at the circuit breaker for safety.

    • 2

Access the service panel on the side of the unit, typically located at the top or side of the unit. Unscrew the screws holding the panel in place.

    • 3

Locate the fan blower. The fan blower will be housed near the motor, often in a cylinder-shaped housing with grates on either side of the fan. Unscrew the grates to expose the fan.

    • 4

Vacuum out any dust with the brush attachment on the vacuum. Clean the fan blades with the cleaning liquid and a soft cloth.

    • 5

Lubricate the joint where the fan attaches to the motor with the lubricating oil. Use only a few drops to avoid the oil dripping onto the floor of the cylinder housing.

    • 6

Screw the grates back in place and return the service cover to the unit. Turn the power back on to the unit and turn it on to test the job. The fan should turn without difficulty or sound.
