How to Get Plastic Off the Front of Glass on a Pellet Stove

Melted plastic on a hot glass surface is a common problem. Soft, thin plastic, such as that used to make grocery bags and food wrappers readily fuses to heated glass creating a thin plastic film. Since the film is typically too thin to grasp and peel from the glass, it must be loosened and lifted. The method used to remove melted plastic from smooth glass is essentially the same for windows, stove inserts or glass cook tops. A lubricating fluid dissolves and softens the melted plastic, allowing a razor scraper, like those used by painters, to easily slide between the glass and the plastic film, quickly removing the mess.

Instructions

    • 1

Spray ammonia-based window cleaner onto the glass insert on the pellet stove. Completely cover the melted plastic. Wait a couple of minutes for the window cleaner to penetrate the holes in the plastic and to seep under its edges.

    • 2

Hold the razor scraper so your thumb is on one side and your fingers are on the other side. Extend the blade. Rest the blade on the glass so it forms a shallow angle, almost parallel with the glass insert. Apply light to moderate pressure as you slide the scraper across the glass, lifting the melted plastic as you scrape.

Wipe the blade clean with a soft rag. Continue scraping the melted plastic from the stove. The plastic is easiest to remove when it and the glass are wet. If necessary, reapply window cleaning solution to finish the job.
