How to Remove an Old Nondigital Honeywell Thermostat

The round, basic Honeywell thermostat controls both the heating and the air conditioning units in a house. This type of thermostat is operated manually, which means that you can't program it like a digital one. To adjust the thermostat, you must turn the clear ring to the desired temperature on the dial. If you want to replace your Honeywell thermostat with a new model, or maybe even upgrade to a digital, you'll need to remove the existing one first.

Instructions

    • 1

Grasp the colored part of the plastic ring firmly. Pull the cover straight off.

    • 2

Turn off the electricity to the furnace and the Honeywell thermostat. If there is no switch to shut the power off near the furnace -- it looks like a light switch that you simply flip off and on -- turn the furnace off at the breaker box.

    • 3

Locate the three small screws that secure the Honeywell thermostat to its base plate. Remove them with a flat-head screwdriver. Pull the thermostat off the base.

    • 4

Locate the four connectors on the base plate. They are screws with wires wrapped around them. Just loosen the screws so you can remove the wires.

    • 5

Remove each wire carefully from its connector by grabbing it with a pair of needle-nose pliers. Unwrap each wire and pull it away from the Honeywell thermostat.

    • 6

Locate the two screws that secure the base of the Honeywell thermostat to the wall. Remove them with a flat-head screwdriver.

    • 7

Grasp the base plate with one hand and pull it off the wall. Pull the wire cable through the hole in the back of the plate to remove it. Hold on to the wires firmly so they don't slide into the hole in the wall and disappear.
