How to Adjust the Ambient Temperature on a Home Thermostat

The ambient temperature, sometimes called room temperature, is the name given to the air temperature in your home at any given time. The temperature setting on your thermostat controls the ambient temperature of your home: You can set the furnace to warm your home or adjust the air conditioner to keep your property cool. Making adjustments to the ambient temperature setting is simple, no matter which model of thermostat you own. However, it may take some time for temperature changes to take effect.

Instructions

    • 1

Identify which type of thermostat you own. You will likely have a dial-controlled thermostat, a digital touch-screen thermostat or a digital thermostat with buttons.

    • 2

Select "Heat" or "Cool" using the switch on the side of the thermostat or a touch-screen display. This option tells the thermostat whether to use the furnace or the air conditioner. Press "Hold" if your thermostat is programmed to a schedule.

    • 3

Select a temperature using the up or down arrows on the touch screen display or use the buttons on the front of the thermostat. Turn the dial on the thermostat, if applicable, until the desired temperature lines up with the marking.

    • 4

Wait while the new temperature comes into effect. Open floor vents, if fitted in your home, to allow better air circulation between the furnace or air conditioner and your home. Close open windows to keep the air contained in your home.
