DIY Wiring for Central Electric Heat

Providing central heat to the main floor of your home can be done by installing an electric heater. Installation of an electric heater requires the use of a thermostat. The thermostat is wired to your home's circuit panel and to the heater. This allows you to easily adjust the heater's temperature. However, you will first need to determine where to locate the heater and thermostat in the room.

Instructions

    • 1

Secure the hole saw attachment to the chuck of the power drill. Drill a hole into the wall where you will mount the thermostat.

    • 2

Turn off the main breaker on your home's circuit panel. Run an electrical wire from the circuit panel to the location of the thermostat. Route the electrical wire through the wall over to the hole.

    • 3

Pull the six inches of cable out of the wall. Strip 1/2 an inch of insulation from each of the wires with the wire strippers. Secure the wires to the screw terminals on the thermostat with the screwdriver.

    • 4

Cut a hole into the wall where you want to mount the electric heater using the drywall saw. Run another electrical wire from the thermostat to the hole cut out for the heater. Strip insulation from the both ends of the wire.

    • 5

Secure one end of the wire to the screw terminals on the thermostat.

    • 6

Remove the knockout cover on the side of the heater with the end of your screwdriver. This is a round piece of metal that you need to punch out to insert the electrical wire.

    • 7

Insert the electrical wire into the heater. Secure the wires to the screw terminals. Attach the bare copper wire to the green ground screw.

    • 8

Insert the heater mount into the hole you cut in the wall. Secure the mount to a stud in the wall by using screws. Insert the heater into its mount and secure with screws.
