Trane HVAC Load Calculations

A load calculation is an important step in determining the correct Trane HVAC (heating, ventilating and air conditioning) unit you need. Instead of simply duplicating the size of any former units you have used, a load calculation combines various factors to find your space's cooling and heating needs, to avoid the problems you will encounter with a unit that is too large or too small.
  1. Load Calculation Criteria

    • The load calculation is performed by an independent Trane dealer, who factors in various attributes of the particular space in which you want to use a Trane HVAC. Each of these factors affects the space's heating and cooling needs. They include the total square footage, how many total windows are inside the space, how well the space is insulated, the number of people who will be inside the space, how many appliances that produce heat are within the space and which direction the home or structure faces. Outside of the structural considerations, factors such as the area's overall climate and humidity are also included.

    Undersized HVAC Concerns

    • One reason for performing the load calculation is to avoid purchasing a Trane HVAC unit that is too small for the space. The most significant result of inadequate size is that the unit might adequately cool the interior air on mildly hot days, but it will not have the power to sufficiently cool the air on extremely hot days. On very cold days, the system also will not provide adequate heat.

    Oversized HVAC Concerns

    • Although using an oversized HVAC system might initially appear to be an easy way to avoid performing a load calculation, an oversized system also brings its share of heating and cooling problems. For example, the oversized system will cycle on and cool the warm interior air to a set temperature, but it will cycle off before it dehumidifies the air. Left with a high humidity level inside, residents will feel less comfortable. The quick cycling also leads to uneven interior temperature levels. During times of heating, the furnace also cycles off too rapidly and won't filter out the allergens and particles in the air efficiently.

    Additional Load Calculation Advantages

    • A load calculation not only helps ensure you use Trane HVAC equipment that fulfills your physical comfort needs, but it also leads to energy savings. If the equipment is undersized or oversized, you pay more in energy costs due to the equipment's inefficient heating and cooling. A system matched to a particular space is allowed to operate as it should, leading to longer-lasting service. With oversized HVAC equipment, for example, the quick cycling off can lead to maintenance issues with HVAC components over time.
