Names of DIY Insulation Foam

Insulate your home against winter cold and summer heat by sealing gaps around window and door frames with insulation foam. These products are also typically used to seal areas such as gaps between the walls and the opening for the penetration of air ducts, around outdoor air vents and faucets. Research the different brands available by name before choosing your product to ensure that you use the most appropriate insulation for your application.
  1. Open Cell Insulation Foam

    • Open-cell polyurethane foam is soft and feels similar to balloons or soft toy rubber balls. The walls of the cells are broken and filled with air, and the insulation abilities of the product depend on insulation value of the air in the cells. Handi-Foam Low Density Spray Foam, for example, is a sound-barrier foam with a density of around three-quarters of a pound per cubic foot. Designed for use on flat or irregular surfaces and to fill large cavities, Handi-Foam comes in a kit with everything to apply the product, including a dispensing unit of two components.

    Expanding Spray Foam

    • Expanding foam reduces the amount of air that leaks from walls, floors and ceilings that contribute to increased energy for heating and cooling. A low-density expanding insulation foam, such as Icynene LD-C-50, fills cracks, crevices and gaps upon spraying, thereby creating a more energy-efficient environment.

    Closed Cell Insulation Foam

    • Closed-cell foams have a density of two to three pounds per cubic foot. The bubbles are mostly unbroken and filled with gas, which improves the insulation qualities of the foam. The Supergreen III Foam Spray System, for example, is a closed-cell, rigid polyurethane insulation foam ideal for insulating residential walls and ceilings. It is also suitable for use on floor areas, as it is resilient enough to be walked on without distortion.

    Insulation Board

    • Insulation board is a form of foam insulation that is not spray-applied. A cheaper alternative to spray foam, it can be used adequately with tape to insulate areas such as basements. It is easy to work with and doesn't carry the safety risks of the spray foam products. For example, Styrofoam Brand Tongue and Groove Insulation is available in 2-foot-by-8-foot boards that are 1 inch thick, with “tongue and groove” edges on all sides. The foam is lightweight and moisture-resistant.

    Pour-in-Place Foam

    • This is a “slow-rise” polyurethane foam that takes longer to cure than other foams. Handi-Flow Pour-in-Place insulation foam, for example, enables the foam to flow freely and level naturally, filling the cavity completely and preventing air bubbles. The product is used to give buoyancy and added structural support, as well as creating a sound and air-leakage barrier.

    Surface Insulation

    • Spray surface insulation foam onto walls, floors and ceilings to help insulate your home through heat and cold. For example, users of the the Touch’n Seal 2 Part Polyurethane Foam Kit can decrease the loss of heat in winter and lower heat gain during summer. Used in conjunction with sealant made for joints and cracks, it helps to reduce reliance on energy throughout the year.
