How to Cut the Carpet Under Baseboard Heaters

Baseboard heaters are a convenient method of heating a home, but they can introduce safety hazards if they are improperly installed. Mounting a baseboard heater over a carpet is not recommended, because the heat from the baseboard heater has the capacity to ignite the carpet. If you have baseboard heaters in a carpeted room, you may want to minimize the fire risk in your home by removing the carpet from their vicinity.

Instructions

    • 1

Cut the carpet starting at a distance of six inches from one side of the heater, beginning at the baseboard. Use a sharp curved carpet-cutting knife for best results.

    • 2

Cut the carpet straight out from the wall until you reach a point that is six inches in front of the face of the heater. Make a right angle in your cut and cut across in front of the heater until your cut extends six inches past the other end of the heater.

    • 3

Make another right angle and cut back toward the wall that supports the heater, cutting all the way to the baseboard.

Get your fingers underneath the piece of carpet that extends under the heater and pull it up off of the floor. Remove any remaining tacks or nail boards that were securing the carpet using pliers. You now have a carpet-free area that extends six inches out from the heater in all directions.
