Switch off the power to your heating and cooling system. Remove the old thermostat with a screwdriver, leaving the wall plate in place. Contact your local waste disposal authority if the old thermostat contains mercury.
Label the wires based on the information marked on the wall plate with the stickers supplied in the thermostat's installation kit. Disconnect each wire from the plate as you apply its label. Remove the old wall plate using the appropriate screwdriver.
Separate the wall plate from the back of the RTH7600 and pull the labelled wires through the hole in the middle. Place the wall plate against the wall and mark the drilling holes with a pencil on the wall.
Drill two 3/16-inch holes through the pencil markings if you are mounting the thermostat on drywall. Drill 3/32-inch holes if the wall is plaster. Push anchors into the drill holes and fasten the wall plate in place using the screws provided.
Match the labelled wires up with the connections on the wall plate. Loosen the screws over the necessary connections with a flathead screwdriver, insert the appropriate wire and retighten the screws. Remove the metal jumper between the "R" and "Rc" connections if you have both wires.
Install two AA batteries in the compartment above the wiring connections according to the polarity diagram etched into the plastic. Pull the plastic tab out of the side of the wall plate.
Snap the face plate of the thermostat onto the wall plate and turn the power to your heating and cooling systems back on. The RTH7600 is now connected.
