# How to Figure BTU Requirements for a Room
Knowing the BTU requirements for a room is important for installing the proper size heating and/or cooling system in the room. The BTU (British Thermal Unit) is the standard measurment of energy used to measure the capacity for a unit to heat or cool. If you install a unit that is the wrong size for the room, you may not get the desired result and you may waste energy. You can determine the BTU requirements for a room by following a step-by-step procedure.

Measure the width of the room using a tape measure and record it on a piece of paper with a pencil.

Ascertain the room's length with the tape measure and write it on the paper.

Determine the ceiling height in the room using the tape measure and add that result to the paper with the other dimensions.

Multiply the width times the length times the height using a calculator. Multiply the result by 5 if the room has an average number of windows and doors and is insulated. Multiply the result by 6 if the room is not insulated or has more windows and doors than is average. Multiply the result by 7 if the room is north-facing regardless of any other factors. The resulting number is the number of BTUs needed to service the room.
