How to Adjust Intake Vents for HVAC

HVAC units have two main air passageways: a duct that distributes cooled or heated air throughout the home and a return duct that sucks air back into the HVAC unit to be reused. Proper sizing of the ducts increases energy efficiency, as does properly adjusted vents. Closing vents in rooms that do not require heating or cooling, or adjusting vents that are not open enough, can save you money without a lot of hassle.

Instructions

    • 1

Locate the return air vent from your home leading to the air intake duct. The air intake duct will connect to the intake side of your HVAC unit.

    • 2

Find the round knob or the lever on the vent.

    • 3

Turn the vent knob clockwise to close the vent or counterclockwise to open the vent up. Slide the vent lever to the right to close the vent or to the left to open it up.
