Troubleshooting a Bryant Furnace's Condensation Drain

Bryant furnaces heat air with burners or by condensation. During the heating process, a small amount of moisture is made. To keep the moisture from building up within the unit, a condensation line runs from the furnace to the outside of the home. Over time, the moisture in a drain line creates algae if not cleaned regularly. Troubleshooting and repair of a leaky drain line go hand in hand. A leak means cleaning of the drain line is necessary.

Instructions

    • 1

Remove the two screws from the top of your Bryant furnace cover. Pull forward on the cover to remove it.

    • 2

Locate the condensate drain connection near the middle of the unit.

    • 3

Inspect the lines for signs of leaks. Remove leaky pipe with a hacksaw if the pipe is made of PVC or unscrew the broken part. Replace the line.

    • 4

Remove the drain line cap. Place the end of a shop vacuum over the open drain line. Wrap the end of the vacuum hose with a rag. Turn on the vacuum for a few seconds to clear out the line.

    • 5

Pour a cup of bleach into the open drain line using a funnel. This kills all the algae in the line.
