How to Disconnect Air Conditioner Connecters

Central air conditioning units involve more extensive wiring than a typical window unit, which is merely unplugged from a wall outlet to disconnect. Still, disconnecting the connectors from a central AC unit takes less than an hour using basic tools. You'll need a helper and a hand truck to move the unit away from the building if you pan to install a new air conditioning system or heat pump, which includes the AC components in a single unit.

Things You'll Need

  • Adjustable wrench
  • Duct tape
  • Two-hand truck

Instructions

    • 1

Shut off the unit by pulling downward on the lever in the electrical junction box, which is typically next to the main circuit breaker panel in the home. If you are uncertain which lever controls the AC and there is more than one dedicated junction box, shut down the entire electrical system in the building for safety's sake.

    • 2

Twist the thick nut holding the electrical conduit on the side of the AC unit counterclockwise, using the adjustable wrench. Pull the power conduit out of the socket on the unit.

    • 3

Unscrew and remove the vapor lines from the side of the unit by unscrewing the lock nut on the end of each line, using the wrench.

    • 4

Place a piece of duct tape over the end of each vapor line to prevent the lines from clogging until they are reconnected.

    • 5

Slide the flat, bottom edge of a hand truck below the unit and tip it backwards with the hand truck with a friend's assistance. Now you can move the unit to make room for a new cooling system.
