Can You Hang Drapes Along Gas Baseboard Heating?

The temperature of hot air from a gas baseboard heating system isn't high enough to ignite drapes. These systems can, however, cause wood to eventually dry out. Natural sunlight will damage drapes more than a gas baseboard heating system will. Be careful how you hang your drapes, though, because you could hamper the optimal functioning of the baseboard heating system since these heaters function through the natural process of hot air rising.

Instructions

    • 1

Set the baseboard heating system to the temperature you desire. Don't set the temperature excessively high.

    • 2

Hang your drapes over the baseboard area if required, but attempt not to have drapes hang down to the floor level, as these will prevent the gas baseboard heating system from functioning to its full potential. Very thick drapes that hang down and touch the carpet will channel hot air from the heating system up and behind the drapes. In this way, the warm air will be lost to the room and you will not derive sufficient benefit from the heating system. Heating costs will also be higher in rooms where drapes are hung in this way.

    • 3

Check your baseboard heating system, as some makes have vents or louvers in the baseboard. Your drapes shouldn't be long enough to hang into or to touch the upper and lower louvers of the baseboard. Don’t obstruct the flow of hot air through these vents. Remove the drapes and hem them if this is the case, or measure the distance from the ceiling to just above the baseboard if the drapes haven't yet been hung so that you can hang them correctly.

    • 4

Secure your curtain rods so that they project out from the wall. Hang full length drapes so that the nearest fold is at least two inches away from the front of the baseboard.

    • 5

Leave at least an inch clearance from the ceiling and an inch from the floor to allow proper air circulation.

    • 6

Hang short drapes six inches above the top of the baseboard.
