How to Install Air Conditioning Duct Suspension Parts

Air conditioning ducts run from the main AC unit and extend through many parts of the home before connecting to ceiling registers that distribute air throughout the interior. When the ducts are located inside an open area, such as an attic, installers suspend them from rafters or other wooden beams to hold them off the ground. Suspending the ducts requires only that you wrap the proper straps around them and secure the straps to a sturdy location.

Instructions

    • 1

Enter the location where the air conditioner ducts are located, such as an attic, and set up a ladder if needed so you can easily access the rafters or wooden beams to hang the ducts on.

    • 2

Unroll enough woven polypropylene strap material until you can wrap it completely around the duct and there is at least 6 inches of excess at either end.

    • 3

Cut the material off of the roll using scissors. Cut additional strips to the same length, using the first as a reference. You will use one strip for every 3 to 5 feet of duct that connects to the air conditioner.

    • 4

Stand on the ladder and wrap the first strap around the duct once, pulling both free ends up until they are above it, even on both sides.

    • 5

Staple both ends to the wooden rafters using a staple gun and inserting at least two to three staples so it does not detach.

    • 6

Climb down from the ladder and reposition it 3 to 5 feet down the duct. Repeat the process to wrap and staple another strap to the rafters. Continue working your way down the duct until it is completely suspended above the floor.
