How to Hang an Attic Furnace

Furnaces can be installed in many different locations in a home. The basement is one of the most common locations, as the basement allows for convenient serviceability of the furnace and ductwork components. Furnaces may also be found in closets or attic spaces. When installed in the attic, you will want to suspend a furnace from the trusses. Doing this allows for easy access and also keeps the furnace out of the attic insulation, which may be several feet deep.

Instructions

    • 1

Measure the width of the furnace. Cut two lengths of strut channel 4 inches longer than the measured length with your hacksaw.

    • 2

Measure the distance between the center of the outermost holes on the strut channel. Mark out this distance on the bottom of one of your trusses. Fasten your threaded rod hangers to the truss at each of these locations.

    • 3

Decide how far apart you want the hangers for your furnace to be. A good rule of thumb is to support the furnace approximately 6 inches in from each end. For example, if your furnace is 60 inches long, your hangers will need to be 48 inches apart (6 inches in from each end). Attach another set of threaded rod hangers to another truss at the decided distance.

    • 4

Calculate the required length of your threaded rods. Determine how far down you want the bottom of your furnace from the trusses. Add 3 inches to this measurement to account for the thickness of the strut channel and to allow you a little extra rod to screw on your nuts.

    • 5

Cut four lengths of threaded rod at the above calculated distance with your hacksaw. Turn one rod into each threaded rod hanger and tighten by turning clockwise with a channellocks.

    • 6

Screw a nut on to the end of each of the threaded rods. Turn the nuts clockwise until they are approximately 3 inches up each rod. Slide a washer up one of the rods until it hits the nut. Fit one end of the strut channels on to the end of the rod that you just slid the washer up. Install one more washer and nut to hold the strut channel in place.

    • 7

Attach the other end of the strut channel to the other threaded rod in the same manner as the previous step. Install the last strut to the other pair of threaded rods. You will now have two strut channels parallel to each other.

    • 8

Enlist the help of a friend. Lift the furnace and slide it on to the pair of strut channels. If everything works out, once the furnace is centered on the strut channels, they should be 6 inches in from each end of the furnace.

Level the furnace. Utilizing a level and a socket wrench, adjust the nuts on each of the threaded rods until the furnace is level both ways and is of satisfactory height. Tighten the nuts down to finalize the process.
