How to Wire a Packard Capacitor POCD405

You can wire in a replacement Packard POCD405 capacitor to your heating, ventilation and air conditioning system. The POCD405 is a dual-run capacitor with a microfarad rating of 40 and 5. Capacitors store electricity from an alternating current source so that a direct current output has a constant flow. The amount of electricity stored and available for consumption is rated in microfarads or MFD. The more powerful of the terminals goes to the air conditioner compressor motor and the lower MFD terminal connects to the blower fan.

Things You'll Need

  • Wire cutters
  • Wire strippers
  • Female spade connectors
  • Needlnose pliers

Instructions

    • 1

Turn off the power to your air conditioning unit. Never work on a live electrical circuit. Wait at least one hour after the power is off before beginning work to give the capacitors time to fully discharge.

    • 2

Examine the wiring for the existing capacitor. If possible, read the labels on the old capacitor before removing the wires. The 40 MFD terminal will connect to the compressor motor; the 5 MFD terminal will connect to the fan motor; and the remaining terminal provides a common connection. If you can't read the labels on the old compressor, consult the wiring diagram for your air conditioner.

    • 3

Remove the female spade connections from the existing wires if they are corroded or damaged. If the old capacitor has leaked, use gloves when removing the wires and the capacitor. If the wire connections are in good condition, leave them in place.

    • 4

Replace any damaged connections by stripping the last half-inch of insulation from the wire and bending the wire over with the pliers. Slip the tube of the female spade connectors over the bare wires and crimp them in place with the crimping tool.

    • 5

Connect the condenser motor wire to the terminal labeled with 40 MFD on the Packard POCD405, connect the fan wire to the 5 MFD terminal and the common wire to the common terminal.

    • 6

Mount the capacitor in place and turn the power on to the air conditioner.
