How to Identify an Air Conditioner Valve Core

Valve cores, also known as Schrader valves, are used in air conditioning systems for servicing purposes. Refrigerant pumps into the air conditioner through the valve core in the same way air is pumped into a tire. When the flow of refrigerant stops, the valve core closes and seals off the line. Valve cores are manufactured in varying diameters for different applications. You can locate and identify the valve core on your air conditioner with basic do-it-yourself skills.

Instructions

    • 1

Turn the power to your air conditioning unit off at the breaker or fuse box.

    • 2

Find the service panel on the air conditioner. The panel is usually where the refrigerant lines enter the unit from the house.

    • 3

Remove the panel screws using the appropriate screwdriver. Turn the screws counterclockwise and remove the panel.

    • 4

Follow the refrigerant lines to the line servicing port where the valve core is located. The valve core is identified by its conspicuously large cap. Valve core caps may be knurled or six-sided.
