My Trane Furnace XE90 Is Squealing

The Trane XE90 furnace is a residential model that features a quiet fan to eliminate audible sounds during use and a direct vent option to reduce environmental exposure and maintain proper combustion. A squealing noise, during use, may require the services of an authorized Trane technician to eliminate the noise and perform routine maintenance to ensure proper performance.
  1. Filters

    • Dirty filters restrict consistent airflow into your gas furnace and add stress to the motor. A squealing noise may occur as the motor runs harder to receive air and can decrease the lifespan of the furnace. Filters should be replaced monthly and can be purchased directly from Trane. Filters attract dust, debris and other allergens when drawing in air and quickly accumulate dust if the furnace is used continuously.

    Coils

    • The coils located on the sides of the gas furnace will become dirty over time and must be professionally cleaned to restore use of the furnace. With dirty coils, the furnace will squeal as it attempts to pull in air through its system and should not be used until proper maintenance is performed on the unit. A furnace that continues to run, while the coils are dirty, can freeze up and be thawed out by turning off the thermostat for at least three hours.

    Thermostat

    • The Trane XE90's thermostat may be set too high or too low during use, which can result in stress on the furnace's motor. An overworked motor decreases its heating efficiency and squeals when it requires replacement or maintenance. A certified Trane technician can repair the furnace to eliminate the noise. Once the furnace is replaced, the thermostat should not be set too high or low to prevent future issues. The proper thermostat setting depends on the size of your home and the desired temperature.

    Maintenance

    • Inspecting and maintaining your XE90 furnace twice a year prevents noisy motor issues. A furnace inspection should be performed at the beginning of the spring and fall before the furnace is subjected to high seasonal use. The blower assembly and motor fan need to be lubricated to maintain performance and eliminate squeaks during operation.
