How to Install a Thermocouple on a Refrigerator

The thermocouple is a small electrical device that senses temperature. It is called a thermocouple because traditionally they were made from two fused metal strips that reacted differently in the presence of heat and allowed the thermostat to measure changing heat levels. The thermocouple remains an important part of gas-fired refrigerator systems, but it can burn out or corrode.
  1. Locating Thermocouples

    • Thermocouples are positioned along igniters or gas lines as they lead into pilot lights or main burners. Consult your refrigerator manual or repair instructions to find the exact placement of your thermocouple. When locating it, follow proper safety procedures. Unplug the refrigerator, turn off the gas line and move it out well away from the wall. The thermocouple looks like a small copper tube or screw located by the burner.

    Replacing

    • Unscrew the thermocouple from its place and replace it. Your unit may use general brackets that the thermocouple and its wires simply hook into, making replacement a matter of unplugging the old version and rewiring the new version. If the thermocouple is more firmly bolted into the ignition system, you may need a small wrench or screwdriver to remove it.

    Tester

    • A thermocouple tester tests a thermocouple’s performance and electrical function. If you are worried about thermocouple performance, a tester helps ensure proper installation and a fully functioning thermocouple component. Clean the thermocouple well before installation with fine-grade steel wool or emery cloth.

    Positioning

    • Thermocouples need correct positioning by the burner tube to properly sense temperature. Carefully measure where the old thermocouple was positioned. I install the new version in the same place. If the burner does not work correctly, the new thermocouple may be loose. Repositioning can solve the problem.
