How to Adjust the Blower Speed on Gas Central Heat

Central heat systems -- whether they use gas or electricity -- have a heating element located in a basement unit. The unit connects to a network of ducts that delivers heated air all over the building. Unlike baseboard heat systems, central heat systems with a blower force air through ducts by using a fan blower. Many of these systems use variable speed blowers that automatically adjust based on the temperature settings and amount of force needed to blow air through the system.

Instructions

    • 1

Locate your heat system thermostat control box, usually located on a wall on the first floor of the building.

    • 2

Adjust the thermostat temperature to a higher temperature to run the heater more; this in turn will increase the blower fan speed. Adjust the temperature to a lower temperature, which keeps the building cooler and in turn runs the fan slower.

    • 3

Locate the air filter slot on the central heat unit in the basement. On many units you must remove the bottom access panel that pops off. Locate the filter inside one side of the access compartment.

    • 4

Slide out the filter and inspect it. If the filter is dirty, the fan blower will run at a higher speed to compensate. Replace the filter with a new one to improve air flow and reduce blower speed.
