The latch located on the filter panel locks the furnace's filter in place during use, and prevents the filter from accidentally shifting during the furnace's operation. The latch is a thin, metal hook that fits over the filter panel and must be removed prior to removing the filter.
The furnace's interior may be extremely hot to the touch after the furnace runs for an extended period of time, and requires cooling down completely before handling any of the appliance's components. Wait at least one hour after powering off the furnace to handle the latch to prevent accidental injury. Hovering your hand over the furnace to determine its warmth ensures the appliance is safe for configuration.
Remove the blower access doors from the furnace after turning off the furnace's power supply to access the filter panel. Once the doors are removed the filter panel's latch is located on top of the filter, and must be pushed to the left to release it from the latch's groove. Pull the filter out of the filter panel, and wash off the debris to clean the filter's screen. Once cleaned, the filter can be reinserted into the furnace and the latch must be reinserted into the latch's groove to secure the filter.
Professional repair is necessary by a certified furnace technician if the filter's latch accidentally breaks, or if the blower access doors cannot be removed from the furnace. The furnace may be defective if it continues to experience heating issues after cleaning or replacing the filter.
