How to Change the Ignitor on a Luxaire Furnace

The Luxaire gas furnace uses an electric ignitor made of thin, flat metal and shaped like a tuning fork. The ignitor heats quickly when the thermostat senses a drop in indoor temperature below the set level. When the ignitor reaches the proper heat level, the gas valve opens to light the furnace. Due to the delicate nature of the ignitor, as well as the frequent heating and cooling of the metal, this part is often the first to malfunction on a gas furnace. Replacing the ignitor on a Luxaire takes less than an hour to do.

Instructions

    • 1

Turn off the wall switch for your Luxaire furnace to shut it down then switch off the circuit breaker. If the unit has been operating, wait for it to cool down.

    • 2

Remove the bolts in the cover plate on the side of the furnace with a nut driver. Remove the plate and set it aside then locate the ignitor, which has a flat metal fork on one end and two wires connected to a white plug on the other.

    • 3

Disconnect the plug on the igniter from its socket.

    • 4

Turn the screws in the metal bar that holds the ignitor counterclockwise to loosen the ignitor. Pull out the ignitor and remove it from the furnace.

    • 5

Hold the replacement ignitor by its U-shaped housing and insert it into the hole in the metal bar. Do not touch any part of the ignitor's forked tip or allow it to touch any part of the furnace. Lock the part in place by tightening the screws in the metal bar.

    • 6

Insert the plug on the end of the ignitor wires into the socket inside the furnace.

    • 7

Reattach the cover plate with the nuts and nut driver.

    • 8

Turn on the circuit breaker and the wall switch.
