How to Attach a Flex Duct to an Air Grill Return

A flex duct can save you a lot of time and money when installing heating or cooling systems in your home. Unlike rigid metal ducts, which need to be installed and screwed together piece by piece, flex ducting can be fed through attics and between floor joists by bending it like a hose. At the point where the flex duct meets the heat vent or air return, it needs to be firmly attached so no air escapes into the attic, basement or crawl space.

Instructions

    • 1

Slip the end of the flex duct over the lip of the air grill return on the backside of the wall or ceiling.

    • 2

Place a plastic collar around the circumference of the flex duct at a point close enough to the grill return that it engages the lip. When positioned correctly, the end of the flex duct is pinned between the plastic collar on the outside and the lip of the grill on the inside.

    • 3

Tighten the plastic collar by pulling on its end with a pair of pliers. Tighten it enough that it firmly holds the end of the flex duct, but not so much that it deforms the circular lip on the inside of the flex duct.

Clip off the end of the plastic duct that is hanging loose after tightening, using a pair of tin snips.
