How to Install a Woodstove in a Fireplace

Clean out the chimney for the fireplace. Use a flue brush on a pole that has detachable sections. Stand on the roof, slide the brush into the chimney flue and move it up and down. Attach sections of pole, as needed, to reach all the way down the chimney. This will remove soot and creosote from the chimney that can create fire hazards.

Put the woodstove into the fireplace. If you have a large woodstove or a small fireplace, you can position the woodstove directly in front of the fireplace rather than in it and extend the pipe from the woodstove to the damper in the chimney.

Measure how much stovepipe you need based on the woodstove's final location. If the woodstove is in front of the fireplace, you will most likely need several sections of stovepipe and two 90-degree connectors. Put these pieces together by sliding the angles onto the ends of the stovepipe then drill small holes through both pieces and secure them with small screws.

Connect the stovepipe end to the chimney damper. Depending on what style of damper is in the fireplace, you will need an adapter to make the two components fit together. You can buy adapters at a home improvement store or at any woodstove and heating supply retailer.

Connect the other end of the stovepipe to the woodstove's smoke hole. Secure both ends of the stovepipe with three small screws positioned at equal distances around the circumference of the pipe.
