How to Replace an Automatic Spark Ignitor on Rheem Furnaces

The Rheem gas furnace uses an electronic igniter with a wiring harness to deliver a spark through the igniter tip. The furnace valve opens to ignite gas for warming the building. Over time the igniter may eventually wear out. Save money on a repair technician by replacing the igniter yourself. Replacement parts are available from Rheem dealers, HVAC repair shops or online retailers.

Instructions

    • 1

Shut off the furnace at the wall thermostat and wait for the unit to cool. When the furnace reaches room temperature, cut the electrical power at the circuit breaker.

    • 2

Unscrew and remove the access panel on the front of the Rheem. Locate the igniter in front of the gas valve. The igniter is a rectangular, enameled wire with a prong in the center, mounted on an opaque case. The case connects to a pair of wires plugged into a socket behind the igniter.

    • 3

Unplug the igniter's power plug from the socket.

    • 4

Loosen the screw in the L-shaped metal bracket holding the igniter in position.

    • 5

Hold the new igniter in the same direction as the old part and secure it to the bracket with the screw.

    • 6

Connect the new igniter's power plug to the socket.

    • 7

Reattach the access panel to the front of the Rheem.

    • 8

Turn on the circuit breaker before switching on the Rheem at the wall thermostat.
