How to Replace an Ignition Control in a Goodman Furnace

Goodman manufactures a line of gas furnaces with an electronic ignition control module. This device is wired to the igniter that heats up to light gas from the valve inside the furnace. If the ignition control wears out, it must be replaced before the furnace will operate. Ignition modules cannot be repaired. Replace the module yourself to save money on a service call using basic tools.

Instructions

    • 1

Shut the Goodman off at the wall thermostat. Turn off the circuit breaker for the furnace.

    • 2

Remove the screws on the access panel on the bottom side of the furnace using a screwdriver. Take off the panel. The ignition control is a black box attached by screws to the inside of the furnace.

    • 3

Place a piece of masking tape on each wire attached to the ignition control and label its connection. The control has a series of letters and numbers along the edge where the wires attach. Write down the letters and numbers on each piece of tape that correspond to the wire.

    • 4

Take out the screws that hold the control to the furnace's inside wall.

    • 5

Loosen the screw terminal on the ignition control for each wire on the unit. Pull off the wires.

    • 6

Connect each wire to its corresponding terminal on the new ignition control using the tape labels to guide you. Tighten each terminal with the screwdriver.

    • 7

Attach the new ignition control to the mounting plate inside the furnace with screws. Remove the tape labels.

    • 8

      Screw on the access panel.

    • 9

Restore power at the circuit breaker. Switch on the furnace at the wall thermostat.
