How to Uninstall & Detach an Air Handler

Air handlers can be used to circulate either cool or warm air throughout a building. Industrially they are used for climate control and require professionals to install and remove. Domestically, individuals can service them themselves and remove them from the home for cleaning or disposal. Air handlers are easy to uninstall because they are typically bolted to a framework individually and are connected to the system by only air ducts and small copper refrigerant tubes. They can be horizontal or vertical.

Instructions

    • 1

Turn off the power to the unit. If there is a cord running to the unit unplug it. If there is no cord, look for wire connectors or "wire nuts." These are cone-shaped, colored pieces of plastic where two or more wires enter at the bottom. Unscrew all of these that you can find with your fingers and remove them. There will typically be only two pair.

    • 2

Unscrew four 1/4-inch nuts. There will be an intake and an output vent on both ends of the air handler. Using a 1/4-inch nut driver, unscrew any and all nuts holding the vents to the unit. Pull the large vent tubes away from the handler with your hands.

    • 3

Unscrew the 1/2-inch brass fittings that connect copper wires to the unit. Use a 1/2-inch open end wrench to unscrew the fittings and pull them apart. There may be one or two sets depending on your unit.

    • 4

Unscrew and remove four 1/2-inch mounting bolts at the bottom of the unit. There will be four flat flanges that bolt the unit to a framework on the floor, two on each side. Use a 1/2-inch nut driver to remove the bolts holding the flanges to the framework. The unit should now be moveable. Two people, one on each end, can pick it up and move it.
