My Trane XE80 Furnace Blower Is Noisy

Bends and Warps

• The furnace blower frame or wheel may have become bent or warped. This can happen because of accidents during furnace maintenance or the expansion and contraction of metal during temperature changes, among other causes. The bent blower wheel will cause the blower to rattle or vibrate. The wheel will need to be replaced to solve this problem.

Debris

• Sometimes, debris can become trapped in your Trane blower. When pieces of paper, leaves or other objects become stuck to the fan blades and other portions of the blower, they can start shuddering and clicking while the blower works. This may sound like a slight noise problem, but the sound can become magnified by the ductwork and make the blower sound noisy. A good cleaning can remove all the debris.

Blockages

• You may also have a blockage in the vents that supply air for your blower. Debris can cause this problem: even though nothing is stuck in the fan blades themselves, the change in air flow can cause similar noises. The solution is the same: clean out your blower, remove all debris, and clean your Trane furnace regularly to keep the problem from developing again.

Nearby Sources of Noise

• Sometimes the noise may be caused by the blower, but the source of the problem might be elsewhere. Carefully examine the vents and ductwork near your blower to make sure they are properly attached. A few loose bolts and they can start rattling whenever your blower turns on, creating the noise you hear.
