Hitzer Coal Stove Installation

Hitzer has several models of coal-only stoves that vary in output. The model you should install depends on the area you want to heat. The coal-burning stove can supplement the main furnace and save you money on your winter heating bill. When you install the Hitzer coal stove, you must find a central location, where it will provide the most benefit. The standard model provides radiant heat, but there is an optional blower system to increase heating coverage.

Instructions

    • 1

Determine the location of the Hitzer coal stove installation. Install fireproof material on the floor under the stove location. The required clearance between the stove and combustible walls varies by model. One model calls for the stove to be a minimum of 24 inches from the back wall and at least 18 inches from any wall on the other sides of the stove. The floor protection must extend at least 16 inches beyond the front of the ash door and eight inches on the sides.

Make sure there are no obstructions such as rafters or ceiling joists that will interfere with the installation of the chimney pipe. Mark the location of the hole you need to make for the chimney using a pencil. Use a jigsaw to cut a hole into the ceiling at the marks you made. The hole should be two inches larger in diameter than the chimney pipe. Cut the opening into the roof in the same manner as you cut the hole in the ceiling.

    • 3

Install pipe supports at each opening using a drill, screwdriver bit and wood screws. The supports will help to keep the pipe centered in the opening. Place firestops on each side of each opening you made except the hole in the roof. Place an insulation shield over the opening into the attic to protect the insulation. Attach the pipe adapter to the Hitzer coal stove by pushing it onto the opening.

    • 4

Install the first section of the Class A chimney to the pipe adapter. Secure the flue to the pipe adapter using the drill, a screwdriver bit and sheet metal screws. Continue adding sections of pipe until you install it through the roof. Secure each section to the last using the drill, screwdriver bit and sheet metal screws. Some chimney pipes have self-locking connectors. If yours do, you do not need to install sheet metal screws.

Install a radiation shield on the opening where the flue exits the roof. Install spacers to allow for an air gap of 1/2 inch between the shield and the opening. Install flashing around the pipe where it exits the roof. Be sure to extend the flue pipe two feet above the highest point of the roof within 10 feet of the flue pipe. Coat the area around the roof opening and flashing using high-temperature sealant.

Install a cap on the chimney to prevent rain from getting into the pipe and to prevent birds from nesting.
