How to Troubleshoot Baseboard Radiant Heat Components

Baseboard radiant heat is derived from a water heater or boiler and pipe system that warms the air in a home via the radiant heaters hidden in the home's baseboards. When a radiant baseboard heating system is not working correctly, the reason typically has to do with a pressure imbalance. Rebalancing the system pressure can often resolve the issue, although professional service may occasionally be necessary.

Instructions

    • 1

Disconnect power to the radiant baseboard system and open the retaining rings on the valve system.

    • 2

Turn up all boiler and baseboard thermostats to the highest set point. Open all ball and balancing valves on the baseboard system.

    • 3

Restore the power to the baseboard system and follow the power-up instructions for the boiler per the instruction manual for your specific boiler model.

    • 4

Wait for all of the 24V Zone Valve Operators to open, about three minutes after power is restored, and note the Flow Rate Indicator levels.

    • 5

Open the balancing valve for a particular flow rate indicator if the indicator is not visible after several minutes, then remove the 24V zone valve operator for the supply manifold in that zone. Locate the clog in the valve and remove the clog if possible, then replace the 24V zone valve.

    • 6

Find the zone with the lowest flow rate, then turn the other balancing valves on that manifold to match the lowest flow rate. Replace the retaining rings and turn the thermostats back to the desired level.
