How to Replace the Firebrick in Winder Stoves

Most Winder wood-burning stoves contain firebricks, which help them retain heat as well as protect the body of the stove. Over time, the bricks will start to crack and break apart. When they start cracking, you need to replace them to keep your Winder wood-burning stove operating efficiently. The size of the firebricks may vary from one brand of stove to the next, so it is important that you purchase the right firebrick for your wood-burning stove. The procedure for replacing the firebrick is much the same for most models despite the difference in size of the brick.

Things You'll Need

Instructions

    • 1

Clean any remaining ash out of the Winder stove and place it in the metal bucket to dispose of later. Remove the grate from inside the wood-burning stove.

    • 2

Remove any loose firebrick that is inside the stove. Remove broken firebrick from the inside of the stove using a flat-tip screwdriver to pry it loose if necessary.

    • 3

Measure the new firebrick with a tape measure, and cut it to the proper size for your brand of stove using a masonry saw if necessary. If you buy firebrick specific to your model, it may already be cut to the proper size.

    • 4

Place the new firebrick in the place of the old brick that you removed. Place a small piece of scrap wood against the new firebrick and gently tap the brick into place using a rubber mallet. Repeat the process until you replace all the firebrick in the Winder wood-burning stove.
